Gum Treatment
Periodontal disease sets in slowly, often without us realizing it. Over the years, tartar accumulates under the gum and acts like a foreign body that wants to be rejected. The inflammation process sets in, degrading the bones and gums surrounding the teeth. If we do not react quickly, the teeth become more and more mobile, until the day when they no longer have the necessary support and must be extracted.
-
Screening
During routine exams, the dental hygienist performs a preliminary screening for periodontal disease. When a problem is detected, a comprehensive periodontal examination will be offered to target the teeth that will need treatment.
-
Root Planing
The initial treatment for periodontal disease involves deep scaling under local anesthesia of the targeted teeth to remove the accumulated tartar under the gum, thus stopping the degradation process of the bone and gum. Follow-up will be conducted thereafter to ensure that the periodontal disease is controlled.
-
Occlusal Splint
An occlusal splint can be used to protect teeth from wear during night teeth grinding, called bruxism. It also helps relax the muscles that work during the night.
-
Gum Graft
The gums protect the roots of the teeth. In some patients, it happens that a part of the gum gradually decreases, exposing the root of the tooth. This problem is called gingival recession or tooth root exposure. Sometimes, the only solution to correct the situation is to perform a gum graft. A simple revision of the brushing technique by a dentist or hygienist is often enough to stop the progression of the problem.

Frequently Asked Questions about Periodontics

-
How does dental decay form and progress?
Dental decay forms particularly when we have a diet rich in sweets. It can also result from poor dental hygiene, lack of tartar removal, and due to dry mouth. It is important to know that saliva also plays a significant role. Too acidic saliva could be a cause of this condition. A person may be more prone to cavities when their saliva is more acidic. Decay is a bacterium that causes the weakening of the enamel. In the long term, decay can reach the dental pulp and require a root canal treatment. Fortunately, several techniques are available to help prevent their formation.
-
When I brush my teeth, there is bleeding. Is this normal?
Bleeding gums can be caused by excessive or too vigorous brushing, an abrasive toothbrush, lack of flossing, and certain medications. Plaque and tartar also cause irritation and can lead to diseases such as gingivitis and periodontal infections in the short and long term. Dental bleeding can therefore be due to several factors. In any case, a visit to your dentist is the best option to check and correct the situation.
